In these two plays the ciassical exponent of existentialism puts the Issues or the real world on trial. The Respectable Prostitute indicts the corrupt moral code of the American South when a prostitute is forced to perjure herself in a Negro rape case.

Lucifer and the Lord is one of Sartre's best works - rich in ideas, dialectic, drama and feeling, Set in Germany at the time of the Lutheran Reformation, it describes the struggle of a notoriously cruely oung general who accepts a challenge to do "nothing but good". Its exploration of good and evil through the suffering of one man puts this drama on the level of Sophocles Antigone
