Washington Irving's two tales "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle" have remained a permanent feature on the American literary landscape long after the bulk of his twenty-four volume work has faded into scholarly obscurity.

The charming simplicity of these two tales has withstood all change of taste in literary fashion, Ichabod Crane and the somnolent Rip Van Winkle are as endearing today as when they first appeared.

Irving kept a sketchbook of his travels, and his painter's eye has attracted such master illustrators as N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Barry Moser, whose wood engravings were created especially for this volume and who also designed the text. Set from the original American first edition, the two tales are available to today's reader in the same form as they were on initial publication. Moser's illustrations capture their super- natural quality and add their own subtle undercurrent of wistful humor.
