From the widely anthologized Orwellian story of the future, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," to the sharp puncture of The Random House Dictionary in "New Dictionary," this collection covers a wide variety of themes: a "moral" birth control pill which destroys all pleasure in sex; letters exchanged by the fathers of a Russian and an American astronaut who have collided in space; a chess game played with human beings for pieces, a game in which lost pieces are shot; a cheap and legal machine which makes people happy while they starve to death; a half-black war orphan in Germany who has never seen a black man; etc. Most of these stories were originally published in national magazines such as "Cosmopolitan," "Playboy," "Ladies' Hom Journal," and "The Saturday Evening Post."
