This volume contains everything that was collected in the original Portable Dorothy Parker, which was arranged by Mrs. Parker herself and published in 1944. Included are two volumes of short stories and three of poetry, as well as later stories. This extensive collection allows the reader to enjoy again and again her light, brilliantly concise, satiri- cal poems and her sensitive, witty stories.

Dorothy Parker is, perhaps, best known for "Constant Reader," her book reviews that appeared in The New Yorker. These are also reprinted here in their entirety, along with numerous play reviews, and critical articles on James Thurber, George Eliot, Shirley Jackson, Jack Kerouac, and others. Brendan Gill's introduction offers a brief biography of Dorothy Parker, examines her celebrity and accom- plishments in the context of the time in which she lived, and presents an explanation of her enduring place in the literature of twentieth-century America.
