On October 6, 1930-one day less than a year after the appearance of The Sound and the Fury-As I Lay Dying, Faulkner's fifth novel, was published. There was a second printing in 1933. Though As I Lay Dying was added to The Modern Library in 1946 (with The Sound and the Fury), it has not been available in a separate trade edition for thirty years. This new edition has been corrected in accordance with the original manuscript and typescript, and entirely reset.
As I Lay Dying is Faulkner’s harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother. Narrated in turn by each of the family members -- including Addie herself -- as well as others; the novel ranges in mood, from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. Considered one of the most influential novels in American fiction in structure, style, and drama, As I Lay Dying is a true 20th-century classic.
