In the general literature on ghosts and hauntings in the British Isles, Scottish ghosts have tended to be absorbed in much the same way as Scottish institutions have been assimilated as the result of the Treaty of Union in 1707. This book is an attempt, the first so far as is known, to assert the independence of the Scottish ghost as a spiritual manifestation in its own national right.
The author has tried, so far as possible, to include in the book only authentic instances of the par normal. He has ranged over the whole area of the subject: from actual sightings by one or more persons, to noises, lights, strange happenings and wraiths of the living, and has taken examples from many centuries back to the present day.
While the book does not profess to be comprehensive, the author has endeavored to cite as many different types of experience so as to indicate that in Scotland there exists, even today, a world about us which tan- talizes, excites, frightens, mystifies and cajoles us to its very threshold
