ABOUT THE BOOK

A short account of the renowned author growing up in 1920s Manchester

Anthony Burgess (1917-93) served in the Education Corps in the Second World War, and later worked as a teacher. During his stationing in Malaysia and Borneo with the Colonial Service at the time of the Independence Movement, he began writing A Malayan Trilogy (published in Penguin as The Long Day Wanes) and Devil of a State.

Anthony Burgess's autobiography was written in two volumes: Little Wilson and Big God (1987), from which Childhood is taken, and You've Had Your Time (1990).

Among the selection of his novels published in Penguin are A Clockwork Orange, Earthly Powers and The Complete Enderby.
