Dirk Bogarde has starred in over sixty films since 1947 and is one of the world's most accomplished screen actors. In recent years he has become a bestselling author with the publication of seven volumes of autobiography, including Backcloth from which this extract is taken, another work of non-fiction and five novels. They are all published in Penguin.

In 1990 Dirk Bogarde was made a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and he received a knighthood in 1992.
