These stories have never before appeared in a book. The title story, the last to be printed in a magazine during O'Hara's lifetime, was published by The Saturday Evening Post on November 30, 1968, too late for inclusion in the last volume he himself collected. "Christmas Poem" came out in The New Yorker (Decem-ber 19, 1964) and "The Journey to Mount Clemens" in The Saturday Evening Post (Au-gust 1974).

All of this group, which contains some of the best he produced, were apparently written during the nineteen sixties, the decade during which O'Hara completed six big collections.  They are on average much longer than those of the thirties and forties, when, as he put it,  "time was cheap and everlasting and one could say it all in 2,000 words." These fourteen stories produce, therefore, a larger book than the thirty-four that comprise The Time Element and Other Stories (1972).

The publication date of Appointment in Samarra was August 16, 1934; Good Samaritan and Other Stories thus comes on the fortieth anniversary of that date.
