ABOUT THE BOOK

Finalist for the 1964 National Book Award for Fiction.

A collection of twelve stories which defend the human condition from a variety of cultural and social perspectives.

This is Bernard Malamud's first book of stories since The Magic Barrel, which won the National Book Award for fiction.

His new book, a defense of the human at a time when the human is most threatened, displays an even greater variety and wider range of his gifts as an imaginative writer.
