ABOUT THE BOOK

Kansas, the editors remind us, is a place where things have moved fast-where "within their own life-span storytellers have seen the whole period of its development from territory to state, from frontier to continental crossroads." But despite its comparatively brief history there exists-in addition to the many legends and stories, songs and sayings brought in by the pioneers-"a great quantity of lore identifiably Kansan, created within the state's borders and revealing much about the land and its people.... Kansans have sung, jested, bragged of the natural phenomena and the real personages affecting their lives or tickling their fancy-of crops and the weather and cowhands and buffalo skinners-as well as the universal themes of love, work, religion, death."

The twelve studies presented in KANSAS FOLKLORE are strong evidence that the state is rich in material which is both interesting in itself and of potential value for future comparative studies. This first book-length collection of Kansas lore includes sections on "Folktales," "Legends," "Beliefs, Superstitions, and Sayings," "Proverbs and Riddles," "Dialect," "Folk Verse," "Folksongs and Ballads," "Customs," "Dances and Games, and "Recipes." Studies have been contributed by Charles Burgess, Mary Koch, Hemy H. Malone, Joan O'Bryant, Marjorie Sacket, Mary Frances White, and the editors. Paul A. Gatschet and William E. Koch have supplied motif analy.
