Notes From a Sea Diary: Hemingway All the Way by Nelson Algren

FIRST EDITION • FIRST PRINTING [1965]  G.P. PUTNAM'S SONS

Half-title page has been signed by Nelson Algren and dated 3/28/66.

*Note-- blue Ink from signature shows significant bleed through to front panel of dust jacket and first few pages.  Thankfully, it tapers off entirely before the actual text begins (see photos.)

Besides the bleed-through mentioned above, the book is in absolutely beautiful condition.

Dust jacket is clean, crisp and in tact with only very mild shelf / edge wear.  Now housed in a new Archival Quality jacket protector.

Book itself reads like new.  Blue cloth boards are pristine and binding is tight.

One of the most neglected of modern American authors and also one of the best loved, Nelson Algren's powerful voice rose from the urban wilderness of postwar Chicago, and it is to that city of hustlers, addicts and scamps that he returned again and again, eventually raising Chicago’s “lower depths” up onto a stage for the whole world to behold. Recipient of the first National Book Award for fiction and lauded by Hemingway as “one of the two best authors in America,” Algren remains among our most defiant and enduring novelists.

Nelson Algren describe his journeys through the seamier sides of great American cities and the international social and political landscapes of the mid-1960s.

Notes from a Sea Diary offers one of the most remarkable appraisals of Ernest Hemingway ever written. Aboard the freighter Malayasia Mail, Algren ponders his personal encounter with Hemingway in Cuba and the values inherent in Hemingway’s stories as he visits the ports of Pusan, Kowloon, Bombay, and Calcutta.
