This is the story of Eric and May Miller, a young couple who desperately want a child and who cannot adopt one. May is a quiet, gentle girl whose frustrated impulse toward motherhood has begun to gnaw at her, remorselessly and dangerously. Eric is a bois-terous, aggressive man whose failure to father a child has begun to undermine his confidence in himself.
