It is impossible to measure the extent to which the genius of August Strindberg has influenced the course of modern drama. His dramatic technique ranged from naturalism to expressionism. Both the boldness of his thought and its originality left permanent marks on the conventions of the theatre. Sean O'Casey called him "the greatest of them all"; Eugene O'Neill remarked that he had learned more about playwriting from him than from any other dramatist; Shaw described him a "the only genuinely Shakespearean modern dramatist." These comments attest simply and incontrovertibly to Strindberg's great talent and his enduring influence.
