Set on Long Beach Island in the 1870's, this is the story of an eventful year in Jane Jones' life.

Jane's father was the lighthouse keeper on the lonely, windswept island. Jane loved the island. She would have liked to run free on the beach and listen to the surf, sketch the birds and the unusual shells she found But her mother believed that a girl of almost thirteen should learn to cook and sew and behave decorously. Mother missed the friends and shops she had left behind in Ph-ladelphia, and she wanted to teach her oniy daughter all that a proper young lady should know.

Many things happened in the course of a year to affect Jane's feelings about herself and others. She formed a demanding friendship, witnessed a tragic shipwreck, and made a difficult decision about a promise.

This fresh, readable story by the author of The Terrible Wave is illustrated with aw-ings by Judith Gwyn Brown, which capture all the charm of the period setting. Jane is a warm, delightful girl with problems and worries as real as any girl's today.
