Tropic of Capricorn by Henry Miller
HARDCOVER RE-PRINT [1961] CASTLE BOOKS
Castle books 60's hardcover re-issue, very similar looking to the Grove Press first edition.
Hardcover with dust jacket in good condition.
Dust jacket is clean and in tact with one torn edge on front and some chipping to edges of spine. Otherwise very good, housed in a new HQ brodart jacket protector.
Book itself has some foxing to text block, but otherwise very good. Clean gold boards with some tanning to undersides of cover and one cropped corner on front endpaper. Pages look and read beautifully.
Banned in America for almost thirty years because of its explicit sexual content, this companion volume to Miller’s Tropic of Cancer chronicles his life in 1920s New York City. A cult modern classic, Tropic of Capricorn is daring, frank and influential.
A story of sexual and spiritual awakening, Tropic of Capricorn shocked readers when it was published in 1939. A mixture of fiction and autobiography, it is the story of Henry V. Miller who works for the Cosmodemonic telegraph company in New York in the 1920s and tries to write the most important work of literature that was ever published. Tropic of Capricorn paints a dazzling picture of the life of the writer and of New York City between the wars: the skyscrapers and the sewers, the lust and the dejection, the smells and the sounds of a city that is perpetually in motion, threatening to swallow everyone and everything.
