What Else But Home is a story of the love, cruelty, friendship and temptation that seethe beneath the seemingly placid surface of a typical small town. It is set in Old Kane, Illinois, in 1948.

Three men return to their changed hometown of Old Kane along very different paths-Cappy Giberson from journalism school, Drayton Hunt, his biological father, from prison, and Tick Giberson from a traveling evangelist's life. Tortuous love between Cappy and the amorous Oleeta Hetzel and a crime in their midst are among the complications as the men seek to build new lives.
